Mike Huckabee is a nasty, vile little man. He is an attention whore. The fact that he is from my home state of Arkansas is yet another strike against him, since he shines a very unwelcome spotlight on a very backward state. He draws in criticism on all of us who live here, and in turn those of us who are trying to live Blue in a sea of Red have to cope with a multitude of slurs and insults everywhere we go, both online and in real life. We do not need any more bad publicity, Mike. We have too much already. He has nothing whatsoever of value to add to any public conversation, and has not been relevant in quite some time. I loathe the man, and I abhor pretty much everything he stands for. I wanted to be absolutely, sparkling, crystal clear about that.
So I could tell you this………..
As much as I dislike Huckabee, I am equally opposed to the GOP platform and ideology. Very little that issues from the right of center these days manages to be anything other than totally offensive. Even when you allow for the embellishments of hype in the media, it is clear that there is indeed a war on women, children, families, the middle & lower classes, the disadvantaged & disenfranchised, non-Christians of every and no faith & set of beliefs and non-beliefs, minorities, and pretty much everyone who is not an elite, upper class, older white male. The strong denials from the GOP on this just highlight their fractured and problematic relationship with the wing-nuts who have taken over in recent years.
They say they want to buff up their image. The RNC’s chairperson Reince Priebus was quoted in an interview with the National Review on Friday, saying that Mike Huckabee should be “the model for the GOP on social issues such as marriage equality and abortion.” This not only does not improve their image, it reinforces everything that is wrong with the party. No matter what the PR folks for the GOP churn out to rehabilitate their tarnished facade, every time these guys open their mouths, the truth slithers out.
The truth ain’t pretty.
I can’t say enough positive things about this blog. LGBT rights are dear to my heart, and this post took my thoughts and phrased them far, far better than I ever could. I’ll be visiting here often, I think.

With marriage equality battles in front of the voters in four states, the faithful are out in flocks to defend traditional matrimony. I don’t know exactly what traditional means in this context. It certainly doesn’t mean biblical, or it would include captive virgins and sex slaves and fathering children for your deceased brothers. It certainly doesn’t mean Mitt Romney’s version of traditional, since his great grandfather had five wives and his great-great grandfather had twelve.
But whatever. I hope they fight tooth and nail and keep fighting until they are so old that their teeth and nails fall out. The battles are expensive, but they are worth every penny. Why? Because of all the nasty things that religion is doing in our country, beating up on gays is one of the most visibly nasty, especially to the young people who will be shaping our future. Teenagers, even many Christian teenagers, look at it, and it makes no sense. It just looks ugly. So bad, in fact, that Christian homophobia may have the power to take down the whole ugly edifice of tribal text worship that has had Western culture in its grip for the last 500 years, also known as bibliolatry. Fundamentalists fear that homosexuality is going to do in their enterprise. I hope and pray to the universe that homophobia does.
To some extent, religion is big business, and when it comes to gay marriage Big Christianity has hired some of the best political ad consultants around. They are sophisticated; they have won at the ballot box 32 times in a row. But every time they win and force us to have this conversation one more time, they advance one of my causes, which is to expose the toxic consequences of biblical thinking.
A small note on my unusual silence the last couple of weeks…….
It isn’t like I haven’t had scores of things I wanted to shout about. There are plenty. Too many, in fact. I seem to have become buried alive in election cycle stress syndrome. I can’t open any of my multitudinous (I love that word, and never get to use it) news and political sites without being assaulted by an avalanche of offensive and terrifying articles, posts, quotes, soundbites and developments. I have been hiding, frankly. I’m kinda’ afraid if I begin to talk about any current events, I’ll deteriorate into full-on Southern-belle profanity. For those who know southern ladies, y’all know there is no language on this Earth quite like ours when we are good and worked up.
I would like to pose a few questions to the world at large though…….
Who the hell are these undecided voters, and what, pray tell, is the cause of their indecision? Much like Sheldon Cooper, I have the urge to ask them if they have recently received a sudden blow to the head.
Your candidate is offensive, pretentious, obnoxious, and rude. He is boorish and totally impolite. He is completely disrespectful. Now, come the second and third debates ( and VP debate) and the first thing out of y’all’s mouths is that the VP and POTUS are RUDE? Wah. Boo hoo. I have news for you guys. Lies, misconstrued facts, and politicizing events for your own selfish ends and gain–especially when you were pointedly asked not to by surviving family members in the case of Ambassador Stevens–deserve no polite treatment or mollycoddling. What pathology do you guys suffer from, that you all think you are entitled (see what I did there) to set the terms for the way everyone else behaves? Only from the rabid right do we see people whacking others over the head with metaphorical shovels while screaming “Why are you persecuting us?”
DOMA is finally getting put where it deserved to be from the first moment it was thought up…..in the trash can. Case by case, court by court, I love to see it go. When it finally disappears for good, and when lovers all through our nation are ultimately able to love and be loved by the partner of their choice, how precisely will that affect ANY of you? The sacrosanct institution of marriage in our modern times is beset right, left, and sideways by unfaithfulness, separation, and divorce. In a great many cases, multiple-remarriage and divorce. Why deny same sex couples the right to be as happy as all of us straight couples, since we are all clearly ambassadors of nuptial Utopian living?
In reference to the absolutely staggering amount of propaganda, lies, filth, perversion, stupidity, and insanity directed at women and their right to make choices about their bodies and health (specifically reproductive health) : Piss off. I can’t be any more clear than that. You people are insane. You are not rational. You are frankly frightening. An incredibly astute gentleman once said “I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it.” Thank you, George Bernard Shaw, for reminding me that you can’t reason with some people.
Yes, I know the last was not a question, but it was certainly a statement I felt needed saying.
I look around and wonder, what on Earth must other countries think of us? I suspect that if the nations of the world were a family reunion, we would be the inappropriate uncle who wears his underwear outside his pants and speaks in non-sequiturs that make everyone uncomfortable.
So Chik-Fil-A has reportedly taken the bold step of ceasing financial support to hate groups. 11 Alive posed the question ‘Do you think this helps or hurts the Atlanta company?’
Hmmm. Don’t need to think long or hard about that, at least not in regards to whether the purveyors of intolerant chicken rise or fall in my estimation in light of this new information.
All this does is put them back at the square one of not doing anything intentionally harmful or discriminatory. So after all this controversy, the best they can apparently manage is to do nothing at all. Well, I’ll take nothing at all over the knowledge that they actively finance hate groups and dogmatically driven legislation, but it would be nice to see them take a further step and join the ranks of those who are actually trying to do something positive.
So…….it won’t hurt them, but I see no reason why it should help them, either.
Absolutely wonderful post. I have been slowly weeding out the intolerant and hateful among my Facebook ‘friends’. I have also had several remove me, due to my increasing political and ideological postings and commentary. I thought I might miss at least some of them, but as it turns out, it has simplified and improved my Facebook experience. Less hate on my news-feed, less ugly commentary on my wall. As those intolerant, fearful, sad folks depart my social media life, I wish them well. In fact, I wish them all the happiness and joy they could ever wish for. Just someplace far away from me. I don’t need their negative energy.

My younger brother is gay. Gay as laughter. Gay as the day is long. One of the finest moments in my life, and one of the greatest compliments anyone has ever paid me, was the day he felt safe to come out to me. He’s in his mid-30s now, but he’ll always be my little brother. And man, I love that kid. He’s brilliant, he’s funny, and he’s kind. And he just married a phenomenal man.
I was always predisposed to like his husband because, y’know, he’s my brother’s partner and therefore has automatic status in my heart. The wonderful bonus is that I really like him. He’s brilliant, he’s funny, and he’s kind. He’s a cool dude to hang out with. He also stood by my brother like a rock when my brother had a life-threatening cancer that cost him his left eye.
Okay, the sad thing here is that they actually do believe they are being persecuted and unfairly labeled as a hate group. The level of blindness in operation here simply staggers me.

Aahh, now I see. This could almost have been taken from the textbook I used at our local Christian college, in the mandatory Christian Family Living class. They probably use the same publishing house.
I was still snickering over this one when a re-tweet on my twitter feed caught my eye :
Sometimes the best antidote to the insanity around you is to find something you can point at and laugh. It doesn’t fix anything, but it sure makes you feel better for a bit.

More eloquent than I have ever been. This strikes a deep resounding chord within me, because it is so very true.
Owldolatrous Productions take on the true implications of the Chick-Fil-A debate, and what is really at stake here.
Read it. Please. You don’t have to support it, or agree with it, but at least read it and give it some thought. The most important step towards tolerance is to open your heart and mind enough to understand, really understand, what motivates others. Once you understand them, and they you, you can each work towards middle ground. Knee jerk reactions that start debates which turn into hate filled arguments always seem to start with folks who just simply do not listen, then put their own interpretation on the points others were trying to make. Stop. Listen. Think. Speak slowly, and from the heart. You may still disagree, but there might be less hate to spread around.
